Customer Question

My dental xrays revealed a dark spot on between 28 and 29 on my lower jaw.

Hello there,

Is the dark spot on the jaw itself or on one or both of your teeth. And what did your dentist say about the spot ?

If you can send the xray I'd also be happy to take a look and offer an opinion.

The spot is on the lower gum and not on the teeth. He referred me to an oral surgeon.

Is the spot visible on the gum or only on the xray ?

Visible only on xray

Without seeing the xray, I can't tell you exactly what the issue is. It could be many things, including a cyst, an abscess, a healthy anatomic feature that simply appears unusual or many other things.

But the most likely explanation is this : The mental nerve is a nerve that is located on the mandible. The opening for this nerve is known as the mental foramen. On an xray, it appears between teeth #28 and 29. And it looks like an oval, dark spot. It is a normal and healthy anatomic feature that is often misdiagnosed or suspected of being an abscess, a cyst or a granuloma. Since the spot is located exactly between #28 & 29, it seems very likely that it is your mental foramen and nothing more. The oral surgeon will confirm this or offer a diagnosis. Confirmation seems very likely, however.
