Hello. I'm a 48y/o female with Primary Sjogrens disease. Every tooth in my head is crowned. Many have had root canals - at least 12 - 15 teeth. I was just at the dentist yesterday to get a tooth extracted that had just had a root canal only 4 weeks earlier. I was having quite a bit of pain in the tooth and I didn't want to try the root canal over (tooth 33). I was given Clindamycin. This AM I woke up with a lot of pain in tooth 5 (new bridge about 3 months between 5, 6 & 7 -- #6 was extracted about 4 - 5 months ago). There is also a painful lump - way up at the top of my gum line between the top of my lip underneath, and the gum on #5. I am leaving on a business trip in two hours and won't be back until Friday.Do you think the Clindamycin will take care of tooth / gum #5 too? It's pretty painful but just popped up. Do you think it will likely not get worse before Friday - given the Clindamycin? Any suggestions on what I can do myself between now and Friday? Pop the lump myself, get some other meds on the road? Please help.

Welcome to Justanswer.I will do my best to answer your question.I am not a great typist,be patient and feel free to ask if anything is unclear.Clindamycin is an excellent antibiotic for tooth infections and should work well.If your abcess is already established, you should be on 300 mg 3 times a day and remain on the clindamycin for one week.Do not attempt to pop the abcess.Give the clindamycin time to work.It normally takes about 48 hours before you begin to see the effects. You can rinse with straight peroxide to keep the bacteria count down. You will need to get back to your dentist to have this tooth opened up ASAP but the clindamycin should keep you from having any serious problems until you return on Friday. If you have any further questions please ask.

Has your swelling gone down yet?
Not at all. Much worse. Still taking the Clindamycin. Swelling goes from my eye, down part of my neck. Haven't been able to work since on my business trip. I think the problem is coming from #5 and not #33. Anything else I can take to get the swelling down. My face would scare small children :)
If you are having swelling going down the side of your neck, you need to get to the ER or an urgent care center.Clindamycin is a very potent antibiotic and if you are getting no change in the swelling you need to be seen by a medical doctor right away.I would not mess around with facial swelling. If you in fact have a resistant bacteria not responding to clindamycin, you have a big problem. Please get to the ER.
