painlessdds : Hello, I'm Dr. Simmons and I'm here to help. If your gums are receeding and you notice a discolored material at the base of the tooth, the material is most likely calculus. This is plaque that hardens over a period of time and causes periodontal or gum disease. It's important to visit a dentist and have this bacteria removed and this is typically done by getting the mouth numb and and using instruments to remove the calculus. Periodontal disease can lead to bone and tooth loss. Are there any other questions that I may help you with?
