Customer Question

Would sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 tabs be for infection of the gums or teeth? Today my four bottom teeth that need to have root canals and crowns started hurting. The infection will have to be treated before I can begin treatment.

If this med will not be good... What antibiotic would you suggest?

Welcome to Justanswer.I will do my best to answer your question.I am not a great typist,be patient and feel free to ask if anything is unclear.Bactrim is the name brand name for sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim.Although this drug will have some activity against oral infections ..it is not the drug of choice.Bactrim is generally used for urinary tract infections. The drug of choice if you are not allergic is Penicillin Vk 500 mg every 6 hours for 7 days.Amoxicillin 500 mg every 8 hours is also used for mouth infections..Other alternatives are Keflex 500 mg every 6 hours or Cipro 500 mg every 12 hours. You should start treatment while you are on the antibiotic to minimize the time period that you will need to be on them. If you have any further questions .please ask.

There is a possibility that the Bactrim may have some effect but I would not count on it.Most dentists can be reached after hours and can very simply phone in a prescription to your local pharmacy.I do it frequently. If you are having swelling now and have no way to get it tonight..it is probably better than nothing..but the penicillin vk will work the best..
