Dr. Care : Hello,I hope I can be of service.
Customer :

I hope so. I have a tooth abscess in an upper molar. I HAVE to go to poland on saturday. The tooth doesnt hurt that much but i do get a bubble sometimes on the gum. Can i fly to poland with the abscess or should i get the tooth pulled?

Dr. Care : If the bubble is at the gum line rather than where the end of the root of the tooth would be, then it is probably a gum infection. It depends on the surrounding bone health which can be determined with an X-ray, whether the tooth should be extracted or not. It would certainly be best to have it evaluated before you leave the country. At the very least you should start taking antibiotics to help relieve the infection.
Customer :

I was told before that it wasnt a gum infection and that i probably needed a root canal. will a dentist extract the tooth on short notice or just give me antibiotics? I've read such things that you could die from an abscess on a plane ride. Is this true?

Dr. Care : If you can find an opening with a dentist tnen it could be extracted on short notice, considering that the tooth can be properly numbed with local anesthetic (sometimes impossible to do with too much infection present). It would depend on the particular dentists comfort level and difficulty level of the extraction of course. It's not a question of morbidity on an airplane but rather that an infection present can expand and create a lot of pain. So at least get on a prescription of antibiotics as soon as possible to allow it to start working in your bloodstream.
Customer :

would the antibiotics keep the infection down? if the tooth is pulled then would i be able to travel?

Dr. Care : The antibiotic would help considerably but not guarantee to rid it entirely. Assuming no complications, then yes you should be able to fly if you have it extracted soon.
Customer :

what complications could i have? what would be the easiest course of action? I have to go on this trip. Not going isnt an option

Dr. Care : The most problematic complication would be a dry socket, but that is uncommon. Yes, extraction would be easiest, although obviously irreversible.
Customer :

would it be easier just to take the antibiotics now and get this fixed when i return in a couple of days?

Dr. Care : If you are only going to be a couple of days, then I think that is a reasonable course to take.
Customer :

well i will be in poland for a week then return home. so you would recommend going the antibiotic route?

Dr. Care : Get enouGh pills for 10 days and that is what I would do.
Customer :

ok thank you very much for your help

Dr. Care : Good luck on everything.
Customer :

thank you im keeping my fingers and toes crossed
