Teeth that are painful to heat and cold have usually developed irreversible pulpitis (nerve is dying) and require either a root canal or extraction of the offending tooth. If you have swelling associated with the tooth you may need to be placed on oral antibiotics as well.
Teeth that have developed irreversible pulpitis will not heal on their own. You need to make an appointment with a dentist for an exam and xray of the tooth to determine the needed treatment.
