My upper right side jaw hurts, right above my teeth. My gums

Resolved Question:

My upper right side jaw hurts, right above my teeth. My gums are not swollen or red and it isn't a nerve from my teeth. I tried advil and tylenol and they don't work. Also ambesol didn't work either. When i lay down the pain gets worse but when i walk around or chew food it doesn't hurt as much. What can this be?

DR. ALEX :

Great question, let me help you.

Customer:

I could really use the help, my upper jaw is killing me and its not stopping

DR. ALEX :

This is an indication of a tooth infection

DR. ALEX :

The infection is what is causing the severe pain, especially when lying down

DR. ALEX :

You need to be on antibiotics to calm down this infection

DR. ALEX :

Then the tooth involved with the infection needs to be treated

DR. ALEX :

Likely with a root canal

Customer:

I thought thats what it might be. But earlier in the day when i was up and walking around the pain went away. Would that still be an infection?

DR. ALEX :

yes, it feels better when you are upright

DR. ALEX :

and worse when you lie down

DR. ALEX :

this is a sign of infection

Customer:

Is there anything i can do right now to help me sleep?

DR. ALEX :

Do you have any antibiotics?

Customer:

I might, i would have to check. If i don't is there anything else i can do or buy at CVS?

DR. ALEX :

Ibuprofen is going to be your best medicine

DR. ALEX :

It helps with inflammation inside the tooth

DR. ALEX :

You may want to take Tylenol PM to help you sleep

DR. ALEX :

In the AM, call your dentist for an antibiotic prescription and start that ASAP

DR. ALEX :

This is the best treatment you can do

Customer:

I tried taking advil PM and the pain is just to much. Thank you very much for all your help.

You're welcome
