Welcome to JustAnswer!

Pyorrhea is an old term used to refer to what is now called "periodontitis". It is an inflammatory condition of the tissues that surround the roots of teeth that result from the immune system's response to disease-causing bacteria that accumulate on tooth surfaces. Periodontitis is manifested by swelling, redness, and bleeding of the gums and superficial tissues, and destruction of the deeper tissues, such as bone. The loss of the supporting tissues around the teeth can lead to loosening and loss of the affected teeth.
