The reason why you may have limited opening probably stems from an underlying TMJ dysfunction. If the jaw joints are out of position then the muscles go into spasm and can become very tight. At this point if you are going to have treatment, a muscle relaxer like Valium and an anti-inflammatory medication can be taken prior to your appointment to help increase your range of motion. Another solution would be to go under IV sedation and then the doctor would have freedom of movement of your jaw.
