HiCustomer Thank you for asking your question on JustAnswer. The other Experts and I are working on your answer. By the way, it would help us to know:

How long have you noticed the spots? Where on the teeth are they located? The biting surface? In between the teeth? On the outside surface? Near the gum line?

Thank you again for trusting us with your problem. Please reply as soon as possible so that we can finish answering your question.

Dear ,

Thanks for the additional information.

Based on the location of the discolorations there are two possible sources for the staining:

1. A stubborn stain caused by drinking black tea, coffee, smoking, or ingesting high iron containing vitamins. Any long term eating of foods that can stain (cherries, red wine, etc.) can stain the teeth at the gum line as well. Your dentist can remove these stains with his cleaning instruments.

2. Decay. If this is decay, your dentist can remove it and place a tooth colored filling material in its place.

The only way to tell the difference between the two is to check if the surface of the stain is soft or hard. This has to be accomplished by your dentist with an instrument called an explorer.

I hope this answers your question. If you would like to discuss this further or have any additional questions, please reply to my answer and I will get right back to you.

Sincerely, XXXXX XXXXX DDS

what about if its hard?

Dear ,

If the discoloration is hard, as hard as your tooth enamel, then you are looking at a stain. Some decay can be quite tough, however, almost the consistancy of leather, so the explorer is needed to poke at it a bit to check the surface consistancy. I hope this helps.

Dear ,

Oh yes, definately. If you haven't had any sensitivity coming from the stains, then they can be either cleaned off or filled, whatever the case may be.
