Is using a receipt to return stolen items and then buy something

Customer Question

Is using a receipt to return stolen items and then buy something else from the same store considered obtaining property by false pretense or theft by trickery? And what if the store knowingly let you commit the crime just to charge you?? Does that matter? And is this a felony or misdemeanor in NC?
