Is it legal to travel by air with small quantities of marijuana for personal use if you have a medical prescription for it? (California prescription) How much would be allowed? Carry-on or checked luggage?

Welcome to

Alex J. Esq. :

Unfortunately I do not have good news for you.

Alex J. Esq. :

Marijuana is completely illegal under federal law, so it would be a federal crime to travel with any amount of marijuana, even if you have a valid California prescription.

Alex J. Esq. :

Unfortunately, many people with valid state prescriptions have been caught flying with marijuana and ended up facing federal charges.

Alex J. Esq. :

Does this make sense?

Customer: Yes. Not what I was hoping to hear......but what I expected! ;)
Alex J. Esq. :

I am sorry to give you this bad news, but it is simply not worth the risk of being arrested at the airport and having to face federal drug charges.

Alex J. Esq. :

Also, there are many ways that the airlines and airport officials are able to detect any type of drugs, even in very small amounts.
