The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1991 that the arraignment should occur within 48 hours of arrest. There can be exceptions if the prosecutor can justify the circumstances. However, as a general matter, it has to be 48 hours. County of Riverside v. McLaughlin, 500 U.S. 44 (1991).
