There are certain fees associated with the public defender program to help with processing costs or administrative costs and if a person really cannot afford those fees then they can ask the court to waive them. The cost of an attorney in a criminal case is roughly $300 an hour. Public defenders are free, but they can have processing costs and small charges to use their services unless the court waives them.
