My sister was cited for not registering her car and was given a court date. She did not go to court and subsequently had her license suspended. She was stopped again for failure to properly display her registration and cited for driving on a suspended license. She tried to register her car but could not because she did not pay her property taxes. She now has another court date. She is arranging to pay her property taxes and her son is taking her to court on the assigned date. He will also help her register her car. What should they expect in court? She lives in Fairfax County, VA. thank you
Hello. The penalty that she faces is up to six months in jail and/or a fine. If these are her first offenses, and she takes the steps to clear up her license and registration, it is likely that she would get some kind of sentence involving probation. However, because the possibility of jail exists, it is generally a good idea to seek the services of a lawyer to help work out the best deal possible and to protect her rights. If she can't afford a lawyer, she can apply for the public defender to assist her.
