Hi Jacustomer,

It can be extortion (blackmail) which can be a felony. In Texas it is prosecuted as a form of theft. See link And how serious it is depends on the value of the benefit that the defendant gets out of the act.

We all make threats of this kind now and again and it is not always criminal. It can be however, if the reason to go public with whatever would be purely malicious.
