If the original attorney will not or cannot handle the appeal, you can ask them if they can refer you to any lawyers who handle criminal appeals. You may also try contacting the Virginia State Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service at 1800-552-7977 and asking for the name of a criminal appeals lawyer in your area. You can also use a site like or that has lawyer ratings and reviews to help you find an appeallate lawyer. You may want to consult with several just to get a feel for their experience, success rate, etc., to find a lawyer you are comfortable with.
