i am try to get a loan from a local bank. In my work history i was on medical leave for 1 yr. The bank is trying to make me tell what the medical problem was. Is this legal?

Unfortunately, there is nothing illegal in the question since it is directly related to your work history, which is directly related to your ability to repay the loan.

There is, relatively, little regulation in what a bank can ask in order to meet its own specific underwriting criteria. You can decline to answer, but the bank can decline to approve the loan, as well.

I am sorry. I realize this is not the answer you were hoping for. As a professional, however, I am sometimes placed in the position of having to deliver news which is not favorable to a customer's position, but accurately reflects their position under the law. I hate it, but it happens and I ask that you not penalize me for having to deliver less than favorable news.
