can you be liable for a debt that's 27 years old in the NY., is a school fee that I was not aware of? I just found out and so far they giving me two different amounts and I have said I do not owe you a dime.
If it is an old school fee it is almost certainly barred by the statute of limitations. If it is money due on an old student loan it is probably not barred by the statute of limitations. I hope this information is helpful.
It is not a student loan. they are calling it a student fees for whatever and they keep giving me the run around, I never took out a student loan I make sure of that.
According to http://law.findlaw.com/state-laws/civil-statute-of-limitations/new-york/ NY has a 6 year statute of limitations on debts.
I need a clear on how to handle these charges.Thank you
You can tell the creditor that they should have sued you 22 years ago but that it is now too late for them to enforce the debt. You can tell then that if they continue to pursue collection efforts, they are probably violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You can ask them to explain in writing why they think the debt is still enforceable after 27 years.
