Hi - I have a Surface (first model) and it has been charging but the battery charge is low (only one bar). Any advice?
JA: What kind of computer do you have?
Customer: surface tablet -very early model maybe RT.
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: No I actually havent used it in months but I kept it plugged in (eeks)
JA: Anything else you want the computer expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: Haven't used it in a long time, no updates to it in a while and has been plugged in for an extended amount of time

This sounds like the battery may have failed. When the batteries get older and are not used much they tend to fail. It is best for them to be charged and drained regularly.

There is something we can try to see if it will begin charging normally.

Try these steps please.

Disconnect the power adapter, then hold the power button down for 60 seconds. Then power on and leave the power adapter disconnected until the tablet alerts you that the battery is low and needs to be connected to power. Then reconnect the power adapter and charge fully. If the tablet/charge works then allow the battery to get below 10 ℅ before charging a few times and when you charge, let it charge to full and then disconnect and let it get to 10℅ each time before you charge again.
