never had it working on surface, but did have it working just fine on widows xp. it is connected by a microsoft adapter from vga to mini display port

Okay, so to understand correctly, you had it working from one of your XP machines to your VGA adapter, and this is the first time you tried from your Surface 3 to the vga correct?

no, monitor was originally plugged into vga port on xp machine and worked fine. Now have monitor plu and gged into microsoft vga to mini display port adapter and then into surface 3. surface 3 does not recognize monitor and monitor is blank. Also tried high class chinese adapter and it did not work either, so I do not think the adapter is the pro
