Go into Settings --> Data Usage --> Menu --> Auto Sync Data

Make sure it has a checkmark in the box

On the phone after selecting Data Usage..do you see the 3 dots button on your screen?

when I select, the 3 dots: Restrict background data (no check), Auto sync data (green check) and Show Wi-Fi usage no check

Okay so Auto sync data was already checked.

Uncheck the auto sync data then restart your phone then check the auto sync data option then restart your phone and check your email again.

Hi Josh,Thank you for helping me. It seems that it all comes back to an incorrect password ***** my phone. It gives me a "hint"
ma"o"*****@******.***. I have no "o" in my user name or password, so what I need to try is to change my user name WITHOUT changing my e-mail on my computer as all my contacts have my correct e-mail of***@******.*** and would cause big problems to change it. Any advice on how we could fix this?

There is no option to change your username without changing your whole email address. Have you tried changing your password ***** a computer and using the new password ***** your phone?
