I have made a substantial upgrade with a new computer. I have also moved from XP
to Windows 7.0 Pro. I need to transfer everything. My son made two thumb drives of everything in the XP and is gradually loading them onto the new one. However: There must be a more efficient way to do this. For example: he brought over the address book and it has about 3500 email addresses in it ... most of them deleted over the 9 years. Same with email messages...years worth that I have successfully cleaned up. He still has folders and documents to transfer and I am fearful of what I may end up with. Can you help please?

As far as the emails, are you storing them on your machine, or do you go to a website to view them? He could try exporting the emails from your older machine, and ensure it does not include the "Trashed" emails. What email client are you using?

As far as files, most files are kept on the desktop, or in My Documents. Usually just copying these over may be the easiest way (with a USB) but it seems your bigger concern is the emails so we can focus on that for now.

For your email depending who the service provider is, for example -- ***@******.***

It would be easier (if the emails are not deleted) to set up your new email client to re-download the emails instead of exporting and importing them from one machine to another.
