just installed the free windows 10; having trouble in getting the start menu to work or application icons to load also it appears to be loading but nothing happens...

Did you received any error messages when you upgraded to Windows 10 ? Are you using AMD graphics card ? Please boot into safe mode and disable the Display Adapter from Device Manager which will put you on the Basic Display driver. Please check this tutorial to see how to boot into safe mode.
