there are a lot of possibilities. it can be a corrupt or conflicting program file

a corrupt operating system. a bad hard drive even.

does it do it randomly or when you run a specific program ?

if it is on a program it is probably something with the program

if it happens totally at random the most likely cause is a bad memory chip. the computer writes to those all the time and reads it back constantly. if a small section of it is bad. it will occasionally flip some bits and give back the wrong information. sometimes it doesnt matter. you get a y instead of an x in a document. But sometimes it is something that is a command to the computer and if the command is totally wrong it will just freeze the computer with no place to go for the next instruction

they are pretty cheap and easy to replace these days for most computers though.

if it is software its a bit harder because you have to track down which software or driver it is. I can log in remotely and help you fix it in that case but there is an extra charge.
