Lenovo 8 inch android tablet will not accept touch screen commands. I have done a hard reset but screen will not accept passcode. Unit times out and goes to sleep.

less than a year. unit comes on and goes to login screen but will not accept an entry. screen rotates as normal when unit is rotated.

remove the battery you will see the model number after you remove it,

I dont see a battery compartment. I looked for a pry open slot but dont see one to remove the back of the tablet

i see you said you have tried the hard reset steps could you please tell me the steps you followed for hard reset.

Pressed reset button next to Microcard slot. Pressed with paper clip till unit turned off and restarted. Also tried soft reset by using on/off and volumn key together.

please try the below sequence ..in case you have attempted it already please try once more
Turn off LENOVO A850.
Press together: POWER + VOLUME UP about several second, that the warning will appear at the LENOVO A850.
Choose: Reset Device or Wipe data or Clear eMMC.
if the above does not work, try the below
Power off your phone.
Next press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power button until lenovo logo appears.
Then select option "wipe data/factory reset" using Volume buttons to scroll options, and Power button to confirm.
Now accept your choice -> choose "Yes -- delete all user data".
After that confirm option "reboot system now", and wait to restarts your phone.

this only give me the reboot choices, recovery reboot, fast reboot or normal reboot.

Steps from the physical button
Make sure that the device is fully powered Off/down.
Find your device key combination, and press and hold it to boot your Android device in recovery mode
Combination 1 - Volume Up + Camera button.
Combination 2 - Volume Down + Power button.
Combination 3 - Volume Up + Power button.
Combination 4 - Volume Up + Home + Power button.
Combination 5 - Volume Down + Volume Up + Power button.
Combination 6 - Home + Camera button.
Combination 7 - Home + Power button
Release the buttons when the device is powered on.
You will see the device booting into recovery mode.
Press the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to scroll up or down through menu options.
Select Wipe data/Factory reset with the volume keys.
Press the Power button to confirm your selection.
Continuing to use the volume buttons, Select Yes – erase all user data
Press the Power button to confirm your selection.
Your device will now be reset to its factory default state.

tablet went to language and time set up page but still will not accept touch input

If its not accepting the touch input that means the touch screen is faulty however the tab is under 1 year warranty in that case you can get the touch replaced from any authorized lenovo service center for free of cost all you have to bear is you will have to leave you tab with them for few days.
