I don't want additional service. is there another way to fix?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
This started around sept last year. just got back on my laptop and got Norton virus installed.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
can you help?
Expert:  Martin replied 1 year ago.
What happens if you press Fn+NumLock?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I tried that nothing changes
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
does it sound like i need to replace keyboard?
Expert:  Martin replied 1 year ago.
It is quite possible your keyboard isn't working properly, without testing the computer myself I would just be guessing. Judging by the amount of time it's been like that and the fact fn+numlock doesn't make a difference tells me it might not be software related.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
does the number lock key need to be on when I press the fn key?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It seems to be the top row keys and numbers row and numbers. the z will not type at all?
Expert:  Martin replied 1 year ago.
Well the FN key usually toggles it on and off. The computer will type out numbers if it's turned on.
I will open your question to other experts maybe someone else can help you without a remote connection. These problems need to be properly diagnosed first before coming up with a solution and the best way around that is a remote session.
Please stand by.

No didn't work

ok, we then need to confirm if the keyboard itself has faulted or if its the operating system. We have ruled out all normal causes for this, so we will need to do a reinstall of windows.
This will not touch your data but programs you will need to install again
do the following to do the reinstall
Power off computer
Identify the F8 key at the top of the keyboard
Power on the computer and begin to tap on the F8 key about 1 time a second (or quicker).
If you see the computer boot back into windows for a login, you have missed the recovery screen. Please power off the computer and tap F8 a bit more quickly
If you cannot get the repair menu screen to come up, you will want to check your keyboard or you may have a hardware problem that needs service at Micro Center.
At the repair menu you will see several options for "Safe Mode", "Safe Mode with networking", and "Repair your computer" as well as others.
Choose "Repair your computer" by using the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the highlight up and down.
When Repair your Computer is highlighted you can press the enter key (return key) to go into that menu.
The next menu will have the following items:
Startup repair
System Restore
System Image recovery
Windows memory Diagnostics
Command Prompt
Toshiba Recovery Wizard Choose this menu item by using the arrow keys to move the highlight and press enter
In the next menu choose
Recovery of factory default software with user data
This does not partition or format the drive, but replaces all the windows software and original folders. Your programs that were added after you purchased the computer will need to be reinstalled
Let this complete and when it has, setup the computer and tell me if the keyboard is now functioning correctly.
Let me know the results please

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
