For Online Computer Support, Ask a Computer Technician
Hello & Welcome to JustAnswer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX i will do my best to assist you
Is this a first time setup?
Please define how the vonage device is setup?
also im seeing some article saying that Wireless drops when vonage is in use with this modem
I had vonage and my wireless did not even drop
Comcast cable modem ==> ASUS RT-N56U
Could be an issue with some specific routers
Vonage mode ==> Port3 on my ASUS RT-N56U
solid green light on port3 on my ASUS router / solid blue light on Voange modem as well
Thanks - Please wait, let me see the router settings.
Can you login to the router's admin interface
im in now
Click the Advanced Setting button near the left of the page.
You should now see a new menu. In this new menu, click WAN.
Click the Virtual Server button near the top of the page.
WAN ==> virtual server portfowarding
Enable port forwarding: Yes
service name: vonage phone / port range: 5061 / Local IP: selected the IP of my vonage modem / Local port: 5061 / Port: UDP
Please add this range as well
saved those settings, but still on my handset seeing the message "searching" and no Dial tone
and forward it to vonage
what's the local port and what should be protocol
i already tried that too, let me try again
what's the local port ?
Local Port: 10000
Protocol No: leave blank
Local IP: IP Of the Vonage Device
you mean for protocol: leave them blank ?
For Protocol No
there is no option "No"
Okay, that's fine then.
for protocol: tcp / udp / both / either
Please type the settings here so i can confirm
after that, should i reboot ASUS router ?
After that, please try to see if Vonage is working.
There is no need to reboot unless the router asks you to
done that with, still no luck
anything to do with port speed,
asus manual says if you see "yellow" light on port it's 1GHZ speed, and "green" is 10/100 mbps speed
my vonage connected on port3 is Green, so it's 10/100 mbps speed ?
No nothing to do with port speed
Can you go to www.getip.com and type your IP here
so far now i have two ports 5061 and 10000-20000 for portforwarding
IP of vonage modem ?
You will see your IP when you visit www.getip.com
I will run a port test from outside to see if the ports are open or not
do you need to know my IP?
Please go to www.getip.com to get your IP Address, copy it and paste here.
Port is not open
Have you put in the correct local IP
i tried that from my pc as well, it doesn't work too
IP is correct
Remote IP is correct. But your router is not forwarding the ports.
What is your local IP ?
any other settings to be checked on router?
are you asking the dhcp ip of vonage assigned by asus router ?
What is the local ip for vonage?
sorry it's 192.168.1.166
(1). Click “Advanced Setting”(2). Click “WAN”(3). Click “DMZ”(4). IP Address of Exposed Station: 192.168.1.166
Enable DMZ: Currently it's set to No
Please set it to yes and set the ip address to 192.168.1.166
is that way it should be ?
any security risk in doing like this?
It's an alternate way of doing this.
Please try and let me know the results.
i did enable that and added ip of the vonage and saved the settings
Now please unplug the ethernet cable from vonage and plug it back in
let me do that
Please check if vonage is now working?
doing telnet on that ip on port 5061, is not opening
Turn port forwarding off
And make sure the IP for vonage device is 192.168.1.166
you mean on the WAN - virtual server port forwarding - turn off and apply ?
did that, and also reset my vonage modem as well, still no luck
May i connect to your computer to troubleshoot this? This will be an additional service.
my problem is i can't even ping the vonage modem(192.168.1.166) from my pc
What is the response?
request timed out
Are you sure the ip for the vonage adapter is 192.168.1.166
yes it is, i have only 2 pc connected and i can verify that ip as well
Can you view the DHCP table from the router's admin interface?
And check what the IPs are for the clients connected?
192.168.1.100 / 192.168.1.103 - pc
192.168.1.102 - my ipad
192.168.1.166 - vonage
Is the Virtual Server enabled or disabled?
don't see the menu of virtual server
under WAN, could see if "WAN - virtual server/port forwarding"
Click the Virtual Server tab from top
all i could see on that menu is port forwarding only
Does the vonage adapter has static ip or dynamic ip
not confident about that, since it's getting 192.168, assuming it's DHCP only
Can you try opening 192.168.1.166 on your browser?
The connection has timed outThe server at 192.168.1.166 is taking too long to respond.
Something wrong with the device.
Which port is the ethernet cable connected to on the back of the vonage and the router?
you mean vonage?
Yes, something wrong with the vonage device.
on vonage: connected to port (blue colour, where we see the Internet globe icon), other end of the cable is connected to port 3 on ASUS router, and port3 is Solid Green light on ASUS and Sold Blue light on Vonage
so, only two options you are saying for vonage,
one is port forwarding
other is enable DMZ and specify the vonage modem ip address as Exposed ?
Regardless of the port forwarding and DMZ - Vonage should respond when you open it's up address in your browser.
any other settings on asus
Try turning the firewall off
no luck either, i can' still ping vonage
Is the ethernet coming from the router going to the Blue Internet port?
should i disable DMZ as well ?
Ethernet cable from Router port3 going to Blue Internet port on Vonage and RJ11 jack from base to Line1 on vonage
Is there a reset button on the vonage device?
yes, i did reset as well just now, but still can't ping the vonage ip 192.168.1.166
Did you turn off the firewall on the router?
give me one sec, iam trying with other base set as well
looks like problem with base set, now it's working, but now should i enable firewall back again, enable port forwarding and disable the DMZ and try ?
Can you now access vonage on 192.168.1.166 too?
phone is working as should be,
still can't ping vonage IP and can't access that IP via browser as well
i think that should be fine, isn't t
Can you add 192.168.1.166 to DMZ again and see if you can access it 192.168.1.166
PING may be blocked, could be AP Isolation issue and the reason why the site may not be opening could be related to forwarding on 80 or 8080.
but now i have "enabled firewall"' and added two ports for port forwarding,
And the phone on vonage works?
You can make calls?
these settings remain persistent even after reboot ?
Yes, they will.
thanks Kamil, so it's 2 hour fight just for set
thanks though, so you guys will be charging $35 for this ?
I am surprised. Last time when i set it up it was done within 5 minutes.
Seems like an upgraded model
I will only be credited if you rate my answer by clicking on the smiley icon.
i never think about base set might have all these issues, may be base set is like uplink from phone to vonage
