Hi Welcome to JustAnswer.com I am Tech Specialist and today, I will be trying my best to solve your issue.
When you connect the hard drive to your computer, do you see the drives under My Computer/
It used to show - but now says disconnected. The drive has stopped - no noise and no vibrations coming out of it.
Have you tried connecting it to another computer?
What happens when you do that/
any drive activity, does it says that it's trying to install a new hardware etc/
Is it completely dead?
looks like its dead
ok, in that case, we can't do recovery via software
You have two options
1. Replace the external caddy of the hard disk, sometimes the caddy goes faulty and malfuntions - do not supply power to the drive etc
2. If that too fails, bad news, you have to take help of some recovery company
Most of them will take your drive, using their equipments they will try to recover the data from the magnetic disk
Ok how do we replace the caddy?
There will be some small screws on the drive
you just have to remove them to remove the external casing.
and take out the drive from it and put it to similar compatible caddy
After the casing is removed what & where do we get a new caddy?
You should get it in any computer shop
Hope they still have caddy for 6 years old drive
Otherwise - do you recommend any data retrieval firms?
There are lots of them, you can go for any local one. Which state are you in?
Let me check online
I myself crashed my drive sometime back and used software to recover all data but for that your drive should be functional, else hardware is required to read from the magnetic media
