Tech Specialist :

Hi Welcome to JustAnswer.com I am Tech Specialist and today, I will be trying my best to solve your issue.

Tech Specialist :

When you connect the hard drive to your computer, do you see the drives under My Computer/

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

It used to show - but now says disconnected. The drive has stopped - no noise and no vibrations coming out of it.

Tech Specialist :

That's bad

Tech Specialist :

Have you tried connecting it to another computer?

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

I know

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

yes

Tech Specialist :

What happens when you do that/

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

nothing happens

Tech Specialist :

any drive activity, does it says that it's trying to install a new hardware etc/

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

no nothing

Tech Specialist :

Is it completely dead?

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

looks like its dead

Tech Specialist :

ok, in that case, we can't do recovery via software

Tech Specialist :

You have two options

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

ok?

Tech Specialist :

1. Replace the external caddy of the hard disk, sometimes the caddy goes faulty and malfuntions - do not supply power to the drive etc

Tech Specialist :

does*

Tech Specialist :

2. If that too fails, bad news, you have to take help of some recovery company

Tech Specialist :

Most of them will take your drive, using their equipments they will try to recover the data from the magnetic disk

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

Ok how do we replace the caddy?

Tech Specialist :

There will be some small screws on the drive

Tech Specialist :

you just have to remove them to remove the external casing.

Tech Specialist :

and take out the drive from it and put it to similar compatible caddy

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

After the casing is removed what & where do we get a new caddy?

Tech Specialist :

You should get it in any computer shop

Tech Specialist :

Hope they still have caddy for 6 years old drive

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

Otherwise - do you recommend any data retrieval firms?

Tech Specialist :

There are lots of them, you can go for any local one. Which state are you in?

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

NY

Tech Specialist :

Let me check online

Tech Specialist :

I myself crashed my drive sometime back and used software to recover all data but for that your drive should be functional, else hardware is required to read from the magnetic media

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

OK thank you. Any other advice?

Tech Specialist :

If there would any, I would love to suggest. :)

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

ok goodbye

Tech Specialist :

Hope you are happy with my advice

JACUSTOMER-icv173kj- :

yes

Tech Specialist :

Thank you and good bye, please do leave me a rating.

Tech Specialist :

and have a nice day!
