Can you please tell me the model of the modem router and switch. The switch may not need to be configured.
Thank you. My Modem is a Cisco Cable modem with built in router. My Router is a Dlink DIR 615 And both of my switches are DLink
so what do you need to configure specifically? is it brand new?
I will try and submit a schematic of my current setup
sorry can't do it so I will explain
is it confidential? you can upload it to wikisend.com
1st Cable in to Modem then out to switch 1 then to separate computer, Also from switch one cable to switch 2 then to server. Out from switch 2 to other computers
ok why do you have seperate switches?
To accomidate for distance Cables are not long enough
i see ok
I have tried to connect router to switch 1 but I had a conflict as both the modem and router have the same default gateway IP of 192.168.0.1
tried to change IP on Router and tried to disable DHCP but it didn't work
what is the ip address of the router and the modem?
Not sure of the router. Modem is 188.8.131.52
I think the router stays constant at 192.168.0.1
both devices have a different IPaddress
I think so
so how do you know there is a conflict?
No internet when both are hooked up
Perhaps I am setting it up wrong
Router shows no internet
how are you checking that?
When I go into setting page on router, sometime I can't even get in
do you have a computer that directly connects to the router?
no. I tried that also and it worked fine
used router as switch
so that worked perfectly?
ok now you connected a switch to it
to the router
and connect your computer to it
All worked fine when I bridged Modem
I need modem as router
My server is giving out IP addresses to my computers that are connected to it through switch 2
you can disable DHCP on the server?
I have done that also
and what happens?
what is the IP address of the server?
I want if possible everything to go through my server as all files and etc are to be from the server
you can still do that
DHCP only servers out IP addresses
from your computer you map a drive to \\192.168.0.17\[name of folder]
What about DNS
Do I do that on the server itself or on each computer I have
Sorry this is all new to me
for DNS you still use the router for DNS
you don't the router for that
sorry you don't need the server for that
the router can handle dns
what about the modem do I need to do anything with DNS on that
if you setup your DHCP to use 192.168.0.1 for both gateway and DNS
it should work
all of this is done through the router? what about the modem having the same 192.168.0.1 would there be some sort of conflict between the two
no the modem has a different router
ip address from router
so there is no conflict
I don't understand Modem and router state they use 192.168.0.1 for the default gateway, and the router as you state should give out DHCP so how woul I go into the settings on the modem and router to set this up
you don't have to do anything to the modem
modem has a different default gateway
you mentioned the router already gives out dhcp?
I checked it and contacted my cable provider and they stated that it is the 192.168.0.1
yes but it is diasbled right now
can't be because then the modem and the router wouldn't be working at the moment
I don't even have the router connected right now
That's how it was. so I disconnected the router
you said you had modem connected to router
sorry I did have it connected didn't mean to confuse you
At this moment current setup is modem to switch 1 from switch 1 to separate computer to switch 2 out to server and to other computers that are being given IP addresses from server
ok you should ignore server and switch 2 for now
turn those off
you need to get the modem and router and 1 computer working
Sorry to confuse you Just wanted to see if I can reconnect my router or If I should just leave things the way they are
connect the modem and router and 1 computer to the router
I can't do that right now as I am speaking to you through a computer that is connected to the server, If I shut it down I will loose you
the best way to configure this is to connect modem and router
and connect the computer to it
the router will have dhcp and it the default gateway
I could try your suggestions if you can type them out for me or some sort of schematic and if I have additional issues I can contact you back
basically connect the cable modem cable to the router internet port
then connect your computer to the router on port 1
If I'm not here
then leave me a message
I'm using a separate computer
so you've got router and modem and 1 computer
and it's working?
just waiting for router right now
all is good
now connect switch 2
and then connect the computer to switch 2
don't connect server
so that works too
so now on the server disable dhcp server
then connect the server to the switch
and test again
ok did you put 192.168.0.1 for the DNS?
on the server
hang on will check ip config on all
just on server
no need for others
Primary DNS is now set on server to 192.168.0.1 What about Ip address for server let it do it automatically
best to set it to manual
like set it to 192.168.0.250
or something that is not within the DHCP rnage?
subnet is 255.255.255
sorry forgot the 0
all working now?
yes all is good
do you have any other questions?
all is good thank you
