My Dell M6500 laptop (Win 7 64 bit) has an updated Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.Adding an external monitor, but only getting a "clone" no true "extended display". EVERYONE suggest I go to control panel then display settings or the screen resolution page and opt into the dropdown menu however there is NO SUCH OPTION in either dropdown menu. I'll pay the price requested provided you have an readily available solution other than ACQUIRE NEW VIDEO CARD.
Optional Information: Computer OS: Windows 7Browser: IEWhat have you tried so far?: The dropdown menu in either the control panel then display settings or on the screen resolution page.
Hello, my name is XXXX XXX I will be assisting you today.
You mentioned standard vga adapter. Is that what the computer is showing?
yes
Ok, that sounds like the driver for the video adapter is not loaded.
click the start button and then windows update.
and
after it checks for updates look in the option updates for one that mentions video
i have no idea where there is s location of "optional" updates exculsively.
I have updates (hundreds it seems) but have no which are optional
(no way of knowing which are optional from the rest)
ok, lets go the other way. let me look up a m6500
Dell precision laptop
Do you know what brand of video card is in the laptop?
In researching dell's workstation laptop, i've come to believe it
is an AMD
I ran Belarc Advisor and it simply shows VGA adapter
those laptops had either an ati or an nvidia. does it say anything about a quattro?
or better yet, can you give me the service tag number?
service tag # 6YHJTN1 I tried to co-ordinate thru
Dell but they never synced with this tag #
belarc reads what windows is reporting. since the driver is not loaded belarc does not know what it is.
The Dell Precision M6500 mobile workstation is the fastest notebook ... the GPUs and video cards by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
thats odd that the service tag does not work in dell. ati video is owned by amd, however nvidia also supplied video cards for this model.
yes - if it had worked for me last week, I probably wouldn't need help tonight!
lets try the nvidia option first.
Belarc is reading the same # XXXXXXXXXX
Ok, I switched from my tablet to my pc. This should work better
we can identify which brand it is.
how about this link
http://www.nvidia.com/object/Quadro_win7_winvista_32bit_190.38_whql.html
Although it seems to be a link to a 32bit driver - the 64bit driver is included in the
click start and right click on computer and select manage
They put three different quadro cards in these laptops. Lets make sure which brand it is first,
Red X - Windows can not findC:/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start
thats really strange, I have never seen that not work before. Download and run the link below. See if that loads the video card.

never never had a program as slow to download?
That driver is 140 MB. Depending on your internet speed it could take awhile.
not compatible with current hardware
Ok, try this one then
it's late here - last go

I wish we could get into device manager then I could tell exactly what card you have.
just accessed "device mgr" - display adapters = standard VGA adpater
no other description
Open vga adapter properties and click on details, from the dropdown choose hardware id. Copy and paste the top one in here
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A0&SUBSYS_12EF1028&REV_00
That card is an ATI Firepro M7740
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats/Product/precision-m6500?DriverId=PW9FK&FileId=2731093281&urlProductCode=False
That is the correct driver for the card. It is also the largest to download at 231 MB
had to do a retry - 48% done
ok
more problems - states ATI Firepro M7740 might have been moved or deleted
is that before or after a reboot?
I didn't reboot - hit the retry buttome on the link
Oh ok, its the download that failed. It must have not been able to resume properly
starting afresh from ur link - this has to be my last efforts tonight
that is fine, you can always pick back up tomorrow from here if the download fails again.
downloaded, unzipped, and install application failure
I'm sorry but I'm done for evening
Did the download ever install correctly?
I think so - it took a couple of more times (actually had to "save as")
but still no "extend display" in the dropdown menu!!!

Hi, I'm Ron. Thank you for asking a question. I see your last tech still is unavailable. If you did not have any results with that download, here is a link to the AMD site and the current driver for your exact system, http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/fire/Pages/fire_dell_win7.aspxLet me know if that helps, Ron.
Note: You do realize that once downloaded, you must run the program/open the file to install the driver.
Here's the latest release for Win7-64
