Customer Question

Hello, what is the simplest freeware email spam filter to use compatible with Windows 7 and IMAP email? I use an own-domain email and web-based access. Thanks!.

Optional Information:
Browser: Chrome

Already Tried:
I tried downloading POPfile (which was top of Heinz Tschabitscher's list) but although the POPfile FAQ said there was an IMAP module, I searched in vain and it doesn't seem to work without it, activated so eventually I deleted the whole thing. Any impartial advice very gladly received. Thanks! Michael

Hi there Michael, and welcome to JustAnswer, I look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible.

Can I please ask what email program you are using to connect to the web based email service? Or are you doing this over your internet browser (via the email website?)

Customer replied 274 days and 3 hours ago.

Hello RichardMe. I did reply to this a couple of hours ago but it seems not to have reached you.

The answer is: I currently access my email via internet browser - and have to delete loads of spam. This was until now just a minor nuisance since I cleared it once daily, but yesterday I acquired a Blackberry, and so spam becomes more irritatating since it keeps alerting me to...spam. Hence my question about a filter.

And now I am now planning to use only the Blackberry for email on the move, and to set a fixed location (Outlook on my home laptop) for storing all archived emails including attachments. (But is there a problem then with sent mail - emails sent from the Blackberry will appear in the Outlook sent mail box, but is the same true the other way round?)

Sorry, please remember you are dealing with a techie innocent.

Thank you

What is the name of the company that hosts your domain?

Customer replied 274 days and 3 hours ago.

It's called Open Hosting www.openhosting.co.uk. My son set it up for me. It costs me £35 a year and is coming up for renewal - should I switch? Actually I don't need all that my package gives me (don't use the website or storage and only use two email addresses, mine and my wife's)

The problem is that this web hoster does not provide a proper SPAM filter.

You need this on the side of the hoster, not as a program on your computer.

The reason is that the emails never touch your computer until they have been downloaded (which is too late)

The screening and filtering of SPAM has to happen directly on the mail server which is why it needs to be done by the hosting company. This is more so since you have the Blackberry which downloads directly from the Hosting Server.

Open Hosting does not provide a proper Spam Filter, so I would recommend that you switch to http://www.hostgator.com/

This provides an excellent SPAM filter on your email service and you can enable this which will remove the SPAM before it gets to your computer or Blackberry

If you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to let me know.

In advance, Thanks for giving a positive rating! Ratings are how I receive credit for helping you today.

If you need further assistance for this problem before or after rating feel free to ask a follow up and I'll be glad to help.

Thanks,

Richard
