I have a Satellite A665D-S6082. Recently (just recognized problem), DVD player does not recognize any DVDs in the drive. Regardless if they are blank or formatted such as a commercial movie. The DVD drive shows up on my folder listing. I put in a DVD, the drive lights up and spins, but nothing happens. The DVD drive on folder listing does not recognize anything is in there. can you help?John
Optional Information: Computer OS: Windows 7 Browser: Firefox Already Tried: I tried checking the driver, the computer tells me the device is workign properly and the drivers are up to date. i did a system recovery, which took it back to about 12 hours ago. Nothing new.
Hi there John, and welcome to JustAnswer, I look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible. Can you please go to this link.http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-usOn the right of the page is Run Now.Click on this and run it. When it has completed, restart your computer and see if the problem is resolved. If it is not, please let me know Before Rating My Service.Thank You
Will try it now.John
Thanks John!Let me know how it goes please
Ran through it, ad it stated it knew the problem was not resolved. I did re-boot, and on startup I got a pop-up n alert that says "TOSHIBA Web camera Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly, Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Very odd. Back to original issue - I tried opening Toshiba DVD player just to check. The icon is messed up, like its not wholy there. The program did open though, and did NOT aknowledge the DVD. The DVD is a commercially-purchased DVD from Star Trek Next Generation TV series, FYI. Thoughts??John
Sometimes it needs to run a couple of times. The reason is it needs to have access to some registry settings, and the first time it releases the lock, and then runs successfully the second or third time.Run it three times (no need to restart in between) and if it still fails, then we will do the fix manually.Let me know how it goes please.
Ran it 4 times, Unfortunately, no change.John
Thanks JohnCan you please do the following1) Close all open programs 2) Click on Start, type REGEDIT and press Enter3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE* SYSTEM* CurrentControlSet* Control* Class* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.* UpperFilters* LowerFilters* UpperFilters.bak* LowerFilters.bak5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor7) Reboot your computerThen test and let me know if you still have the problem please.
Bad news - problem persists. "UpperFilters" was there. i deleted it, re-booted. I did check to make sure its deleted, and it is gone.Possible note - i traveled with the laptop this last week, could it be it got banged somehow?John

Very possible as it is really looking like a lens failure in the Drive. This fix always corrects Software issues, and there are no special drivers so it is not caused by this. One thing though, you said you did a system recovery from 12 hours ago, was this 12 hours ago when it was working?
About 24 hours ago I tried burning a DVD disk, I use Daniusoft DVD creater for making DVDs from AVI or MP4. Anyway, it did not burn correctly. Not completely unusual. However, when I tried again it started this nonsense. I have not used the DVD drive since before I traveled. Then, it did work.
ok, can you redo the system Restore please. This will confirm if the problem is hardware or software.Click Start, type in SYSTEM RESTORE and press enter.Choose a date where you are nearly 100% sure it worked. Then let the restore run. If it is still not working then we have confirmed John, that it is indeed a hardware problem (which I am very much suspecting)Please let me know if you have any problems.
It will not give me a restore point before the one already given. Frak! I did not have automatic restore points established, I am guessing?
Correct,There is one last thing we can do.Click start, right click computer and select ManageGo to Device ManagerLook for the DVD drive, right click on it and select uninstall. Then restart the computerWindows will reinstall this automatically. Then test if the Drive is working and let me know please John
Nope - what a surprise at this point, huh? :)It uninstalled it, reinstalled it, no change. The Drive is Opyiarc DVD RW AD-7700S ATA Device. How hard is it to remove and install? Should I have it done professionally?John
Hi John,Yes, dont do it yourself please unless you have dismantled a laptop before as it requires removing the Keyboard ect... and whilst easy to take apart, it is near impossible to put together unless you have had a lot of practice. The good thing is if it suffered a bump, most likely the Lens is out of alignment and they can fix this pretty easy. I am pretty confident of this and don't believe the whole drive needs to be replaced. But they still need to take it apart to do this.I would really recommend this as your next course of Action John, as we have ruled out any software problems that could cause this.If you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to let me know. And if you are happy and willing to Rate My Service, that would be very much appreciated.Thank You
