Hello and welcome to JustAnswer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be happy to help you.
Your computer/aol could be slow for a number of reasons but I am going to give you some general things to try to increase performance.
First test your internet connection speed to make sure that their is now issues with your internet. If you have other computers that are not slow online you can skip this step.
Go to this website and choose the server that is closest to you and start the test:www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
If you have a cable or DSL connection you are going to want your speed to be greater than 3Mb. This can very depending on your internet providers package but in general it should be around 3Mb or above for the download speed. If you are getting something extremely low like 1Mb there could be an issue.
Disable Automatic Start Up Programs:
Click Start and in the search box type msconfig and press enter.
Choose selective startup.
Click the startup tab at the top and deselect all of the programs that are listed and starting automatically. You should be fine disabling them all however if you see anything related to your wireless adapter(if you have one) leave that checked. You can easily re-enable these if you need to.
Many programs automatically add themselves to automatic start up slowing down the machine and you do not need them to.
Download CCleaner (free): http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
CCleaner cleans up temporary files which may slow your web browser down or your PC if your temp files are taking up too much space.
Next do a good malware scan:
Please download this free program, http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Once installed, open the program, press start trial, and do a full scan (This may take up to an hour or longer in some cases). After it's done, press ok, then click the show results button in the lower right.
On the next screen, check all the boxes and then press the remove selected button to remove any infections that it found.
After you have done the above you should defragment your hard drive to keep file access speeds faster. Click Start and Choose Computer Right Click your C: drive and choose Properties. Next Choose Tools and Click Defragment Now. This could take awhile especially if you have not done it often. What this does is move the files on your hard drive into order so they can be accessed faster. I know you already did this but it is a good idea to do again after you have cleaned up the PC.
You may also want to upgrade to the latest version of the aol software if you are using that:http://daol.aol.com/software/
If you are using internet explorer to browse the web you may want to switch to a faster browser. Google chrome is the fastest available and you can download that for free here:www.google.com/chrome
