I'm sorry to hear about what has happened here.

Alright when these turn on but unable to access data that is very bad, generally means the drive itself is locked or frozen.

The only way your going to get your files off the hard drive is by doing the following:

I have personally used this way to recover my hard drives.(works on all external hard drives).

Only other option would be a recovery service as the expert stated above.
