I bought a new Lenovo B575G Noteboo computer and the user manual is in mandarin. I am at the C:\> prompt (in DOS, and want to know how to load the WIN7 disc it came with.Thanks.
Hi my name is XXXXXX, X would like to assist you with your question. I am an expert here on JustAnswer.com in the computer field. How are you doing today?
good thanks.
Can you tell me what happens when you turn on the Lenovo?
The Lenovo should have Windows 7 pre-installed the CD that came with it should just be a recovery CD
Which would only be needed if you need to reload Windows on the computer.
i get current date, when i hit return i get current time, when i hit return i get a write-up on FreeDos and the C prompt
sorry freedos came up before date, but i am just at C:\> now
How old is this laptop, it doesn't appear to be new if FreeDos is installed.
just got it, this is my first time turning it on
it came with a CD that says B575 Win7 Drivers
type win and press eenter
enter
If that does not work type exit
Does that bring up anything?
bad command or filename - "win"
Look on your keyboard for this symbol
ok, press that?
Turn the computer off
Hold that key down
Turn it back on
Let me know what comes up
turn it off first, or do that while on?
Turn it off first.
Then Hold that key down
ok
Turn it back on while holding the key
Did anything come up?
it brought up a new screen, but message is in mandarin
Does it have any clickable buttons
This will install Windows 7
2 symbols, on left is a clock symbol with a circular arrow around it, right is some kind of gears looking symbol
It's really strange that it was not defaulting toWindows 7
there is an icon on bottom right i can click on
Are you sure this was not a used laptop?
Where did you purchase it?
on line in china
It almost sounds to me like it was a machine that was refurbished and untested for it not to bring up windows.
What happens when you put the Windows 7 disc in the drive?
Try putting the Windows 7 Disc in the drive
Turn off the laptop
Turn it back on and rapidly press f12
This should bring up the boot menu, choose the CD rom
ok, 3 choices, ATA HDD, ATAPI CD or Network boot
2nd one?
Atapi CD
back to DOS
enter new date prompt
Let me take a look at something.
Was that the only CD that came with the computer?
Does it appear to be a retail CD or a burned CD
yes
appears to be retail
You know what.
I found a site that sells that laptop
They don't include Windows 7 with it.
so it includes drivers but not software?
I've not really seen that too often with laptops
That's what this website indicates.
It appears they include the drivers if you decide to purchase Windows 7
Some people who sell desktops have what they call barebones systems and these do not come with operating systems
So you can make a choice if you are going to use Windows or Linux
It must be something they do over in China with certain laptops.
Was it on sale over there?
ok, do i need to go to an online site to buy windows?
regular amazon site
Do you have the link to the one you purchased?
Mind if I look at the description
http://www.amazon.cn/gp/product/B007FMXZ26/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
don't know if you can read, i use google chrome so it translates to english
Let me see what I can determine
under product info it does say operating system is dos
That is the strangest thing.
I do know there was a huge piracy thing over in China over Windows 7
is this a return to company and buy one with windows, or easier to buy windows online?
Maybe they seller decided to include Dos instead since they are legally allowed to install that
i don't care what version of windows i run on
You can purchase Windows online from the Microsoft Store.
The only thing you'll need is a computer that can burn CDs
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/productID.235488300
Are there any local computer shops in China?
It's possible that they have it cheaper in stores versus the online store.
on this one it says drive type is DVD burner
That would work
ok, then it's just insert cd and type win?
Wow, you learn something new every day, I am going to show a few of my fellow techs this question for their references
You wont even have to do that.
Once you have the Windows 7 CD either online or purchased in the store.
Place the Windows 7 CD in the Lenovo
Turn it off
Turn it on and press f12 rapidly again
Choose Atapi CD
The reason it did not boot to the CD we tried was because that disc just contains drivers, it's not actually bootable.
how does this work if i choose online download?
actually can't really do that
Once you download the file and open it, it will prompt for a blank dvd
ok, stupid question - can i get online without windows?
place it in the drive and it will do the rest.
to do the online download?
Unfortunately not.
i am chatting with you on a different laptop
There is another operating system that is free called Linux
ok, so will need to get the CD
But if you are used to using Windows it would be very tricky to learn
i am mostly going to use it for internet surfing
how do i get Linux?
You would need two things.
First a program called Imgburn to burn linux.
http://tinyurl.com/jeremyimgburn
A blank dvd
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
sounds like it's easier to just get the CD
Linux can be downloaded there.
It would be, sometimes getting your laptops hardware to work under linux could be tricky
especially wifi
Windows 7 would be easier, and more user friendly to what you are already used to.
ok, thanks very much for helping me through this
I would check around the local shops though
Maybe it's cheaper in store.
I enabled the accept button after you press it the chat will end
ok, thanks
