Hello and welcome to JustAnswer. I look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible.

Please try to go to Skype online then see if your Skype account is still active. This is to check if the problem is with your Skype program or your Skype account. Here is the link:

https://login.skype.com/account/login-form

If you can still login there, then the skype account is not the problem, it is the skype program installed in your computer.

Keep me posted.

Thank you for that information. This confirms that the problem is with the Skype program installed in your computer.

Please give me a moment while I type the procedures for you to follow.

First, please make sure that the old version of Skype was removed successfully. Do these steps:

  1. Click Start => Control Panel
  2. Open Programs and Features and locate Skype there
  3. When found, uninstall it
  4. When the removal is done, please restart the computer. To make sure that you will be able to get back to me in this page after you restart, please bookmark this page by press Ctrl+D or by going to Favorites => Add to Favorites
  5. After restarting, please do the following cleanup procedures:

    Cleanup with CCleaner

NOTE: If you are using a program named Roboform, please do not proceed with CCleaner cleanup. Roboform Data will be removed by CCleaner.

Please download the FREE version of CCleaner from this link:

Download FREE CCleaner Here or this link http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

After you download the free tool, install it and run the scans and tests. By default, it runs CLEANER to cleanup from all system mess which includes all unwanted files, temporary files, temporary internet files, orphaned files and more. Make sure that all this mess that the Cleaner program has detected is removed. This will free up some space in your hard drive while speeding up your system as well.

Next, run REGISTRY Cleaner and fix the found problems. Run this REGISTRY cleaner several times and fix the issues until no issues will be found.

In order to run the Registry cleanup mode, open CCleaner, then look at the left panel of the CCleaner window. Locate and click the Registry link there and that should give you the Registry cleanup mode. Then click on the Scan for issues button. When the scan reached 100%, click FIX issues to remove the errors from your system. Then click the Scan for issues again then FIX whenever issues are still found. When no issues are found, close CCleaner.

  6. After the cleanup, please download the OFFLINE or FULL installer of Skype. This type of installer will no longer connect to the internet during installation since all required files are there already preventing data corruption. Here is the link to download:

    http://tinyurl.com/dja3la

  7. You shall get the file named SkypeSetupFull.exe. Please allow it to download completely then double click on the downloaded file to start the installation.
  8. Then test if the problem is gone. If the problem continues, you can get the older version installed then test if it works just fine.

I hope you find my answer helpful. If you do, please ACCEPT and leave a positive feedback if you are satisfied. A TIP is always greatly appreciated.

If the problem continues, please let me know by posting a reply so that I can help you further.

Following your instruction I downloaded Skype 5.5 (latest version 5.9), with the same result - no sign in - I am now going to try downloading 5.8, which I think is the last version I had that worked.

if that works great - I'll let you know - but it doesn't answer the question why the sign in seems to fail on the new version.

I run Threatfire & Microsoft Security Essentials, and there is a firewall on my router. These were in place when the old version of Skype was running well, but could there be a problem after changing versions?

(incidentally, I have rebooted and tried again - still no joy.)

Hi, thank you for writing back.

Please try to disable the Firewall that you had set in your router. Also, if your Windows Firewall is turned on, please try to turn it OFF then see if the Skype problem is gone.

If the problem is gone by turning off the router firewall, or the windows firewall, then manually configure your windows firewall to add exception to the Skype program. This is done by going to Control Panel => Windows Firewall. To turn ON/OFF the firewall, click "Turn Windows Firewall on or off". To add exception click the ADVANCED settings then locate Skype and then set the permission to ALLOW.

Then test if the problem is now gone.

Keep me posted.

I have already accepted this. I sent a reply saying that Skype had come up the day following my question. I have no idea why it worked then when it didn't before. Also I ticked a box to give you a £5 tip. The fee and tip have been charged. Not sure why it doesn't show with you.
Thanks again for your help.
