I have been hacked and they took over as admistrator. I want to take back control of my computer. I was previously administator. They became administrator and I do not know their pword. How can I become administrator again?
Optional Information: Computer OS: Windows 7 Browser: Firefox Already Tried: Everything.
Hi Kathleen, I'll be happy to help with this issue
can you let me know the account name you normally login with?
and also if you have access to a machine with a CD burner?
I have no access to my password. I normally use Kathleen Gick, however I changed that to a user name and now have Kathleen M. Gick as Administrator. I have an HP Pavilion. I don't know if that burns discs or not. If not, the answer is no.
thanks Kathleen - have you got the full model number of the HP Pavilion?
Yes, HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx Entertainment PC
ok
yes, that has a burner
so did they take over the account called 'Adminstrator'
?
Yes. It was formerly in my name, Kathleen Gick
In attempting to get back my administrator account, I changed myself to a User and tried to make Kathleen M. Gick administrator.
ok - so if your new user (Kathleen M Gick) is an Administrator we should be able to reset the password XX the other account?
No, because I need their old password XX change my account to administrator.
There has got to be some procedure for forgotten or stolen pw's.
yes, we can burn a CD
which we can then use to start the system
and reset any password
Would doing that take me back to a restart date and then that would mean that I would loose information and downloads?
no, we can just reset that password
and it won't affect any information
OK
How long would it take to get theCD?
not too long
http://www.petri.co.il/uri/?pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/cd080802.zip
How long?
does that link start a file downloading?
Yes, but states that
I no longer can access
my temp folder
I am just trying to unzip the file now
great
when unzipped you should have a .iso file
Let me have a couple of minutes to see if I can get it open
sure, no problem
Says "Windows cannot acces the specific path or file or you may not have permission to access the temp file to get in them.
ok, thinking of a way around that
Windows say it can't accessthe specific file, device, or path ,etc. or I may not have permission to go there. Can you email c prompts to me?
can you download this file?
cd080802.iso
C:\Windows\TEMP\vYXH1aMz.iso.part could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.
ok, are you able to save it to your desktop?
We can try
You'll need to send it to me by email I think for this to work.
XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
unfortunately JustAnswer blanks out mail addresses for privacy reasons
as soon as you put name @ provider it will blank it ouy
unless spaces are used
for example
I got your email earlier re: being online and ready to help. It was sent to XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
yes, if you're not in the Live chat any message will get delivered to you via e-mail
but unfortunately JustAnswer won't show me your mail address so that I could send the files directly there
My email address is XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
all JustAnswer shows in the chat window is XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
I get it. Can I reach you by phone to give you my email?
I wish that were possible as well but we can't give out phone details
So what's the best resolution?
well, frustratingly it is going to be a case of burning that file to a CD and then restarting the machine which will let you reset the passwords
would be easy to explain via phone/e-mail I agree
do you have access to another system at all?
fax?
But it's a phone fax. You would need to dial it.
hmmm ok
(XXX) XXX-XXXX
blanked out by JustAnswer I'm afraid - sorry, I know how frustrating this must be
the current account you are using just has User permissions doesn't it?
It has an anonymous administrator and and me listed as user and administrator.
Kathleen Gick is the user.
Kathleen M. Gick is the powerless admin. locked out by anon. admin. whose password XX XXXXXXX.
right
out of interest, what does the M stand for? Just wondering about various account details
What details?
how the account name has been formed
The first and only account was an administrator account w/me as anon. user, the
Oh--no, I administrator was owner of the sys--Kathleen Gick then,
when hacked they took over somehow as admin. and since users could be admin. I named Kathleen as a user
Then when I found out I needed old pw to become admin,
I named Kathleen M. Gick as Admin.
It still wouldn't let me start fresh as admin, I had to know Hacker's old pw. What
do they ever do when someone dies, I wonder?
that would probably be a thorny legal issue I guess in that instance?
I guess then they have the 3 days to wait for the CD and the funeral.
although I think the CD can't be ordered
usually on a system would hope there is another working admin account which you can use to reset the required account
What kind of time period would it be before I got the CD?
if burnt and posted? a few days I guess
So the CD is not commercially available
no
let me see what other options I can come up with though
Would it be posted first class to arrive w/in 1-3business days or would it come in some other way?
would have to look at options to see quickest way
Secondly, will this solve the specific problem without taking me back to a restore point where I would lose data?
yes, this would resolve the problem
without requiring you to restore or lose anything
How much will that cost?
http://wikisend.com/download/825548/cd080802.iso
when you click that link do you get same isues if savong to your desktop?
not sure on cost
checking but the CD itself is free
C:\Windows\TEMP\JcPrzWs_.iso.part could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.
I need to duck out shortly (school run) but let me come back to you with some other options
rather not have to wait for cds etc on post
i post
back asap
am back - sorry about the delay, a horrible afternoon
Can you check whether downloading this gives same issue as well?
http://www.recoveranypassword.com/recover/windows-password-recovery/
It does. You must be an administrator to use this program. So I can't recover my administrator password XXXX it. BTW, I just received this about noon on Saturday.
I've been working with computers since 1976 and I am confident I can solve your computer issue. My goal is 100% satisfaction. Shall we begin? Here's an article which shows several password XXXXX programs. The most promising one (at least to me) looks like "Cain and Able". I would try that one first. Here's the link to the article:http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htmLet me know if any of these work for you.
Experience: I'm a certified tech support person with LOTS of patience.
The program you recommended is not made for windows 7. Can you recommend another downloadable program?
The first 2 options, Ophcrack and Offline NT Password & Registry Editor are the best options if we currently have no admin access. Both requiring downloading and burning a CD image you can then boot from to reset the password XXXXX any account on the PC.If I remember correctly the current user account wasn't allowing the download of the CD image?CheersSteve
I did not try to burn and download a CD image. In fact I don't know how to do that.Is there another program that is downloadable that you could recommend for Windows 7?
Did you get my last message? I just got this sent to me.
I would try PC Loginhttp://www.pcloginnow.com/product.htmlWhen this downloads it will extract to an ISO file. This can then be burnt to CD (right-click and open with Windows Disc Image Burner). Then the PC would need to be started with the CD in the drive as per the details herehttp://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/gr/pcloginnow.htmCheersSteve
I think my husband has burned CD's before. I'll let him do it. Thanks for all your help and patience Steve. Have a good weekend.
No problem - hope it works out ok but let me know if any issues.CheersSteve
