This answer was rated:

XP mode setup failed to complete...says please try again. Ran the compatibility program and it said my system was good to go (BIOS check). Why won't XP Mode work?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Hello. My name isXXXXX will be your Primary Care Technician and I can assist you with your question.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Very good and interesting question.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

When XP mode was first released, it had very specific processor requirements.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

To remove those requirements (even though it doesn't tell you), you have to download a patch first.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Give that a try, and then try XP Mode again.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Hello?

Customer:

says update not applicable to my system

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What edition of Windows 7 do you have?

Customer:

pro

Customer:

sp1

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

32 or 64 bit?

Customer:

64

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

on moment

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Have you already checked your BIOS to see if you have Hardware Virtualization, and if it is enabled?

Customer:

the MS tool said it was ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is there anything more to the error message?

Customer:

no

Customer:

the tool is HAV detection tool

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Does it say that you have it and that it is turned on?

Customer:

says pwered down

Customer:

oh the HAV tool says I am good to go

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok... that means you have to go into your bios and enable it

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What says powered down?

Customer:

xp mode

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Can you please tell me the exact message?

Customer:

setup failed to complete.Try again

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

what about "powered down"

Customer:

not sure where I saw that

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That's kind of important.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Does XP mode seem to be installed?

Customer:

not sure how to determine that

Customer:

it shows on my programs folder

Customer:

under virtual PC

Customer:

hello?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That means it is already installed

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You mean on your start menu?

Customer:

yes

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What happens when you click on Windows XP mode and select OPEN?

Customer:

settin up windows XP for first use

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

This should complete the install.

Customer:

it fails every time

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok... so you are getting to this point every time?

Customer:

gets all the way to the end of the loading bar thing and then says setup failed to complete please try again

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I need any information you can give me... for example, it would have been very helpful to know that you were getting this far.

Customer:

sorry

Customer:

once it got the the next part where it loads virtual pc, but it said the same thing at the end of that part

Customer:

then it goes back to trying to set up xp mode

Customer:

evidently this has two phases

Customer:

first xp mode and then virtual pc setup

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Yes, you have to install virtual PC and XP mode.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Correct.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is this the page where you started?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

http://bitli.es/fd34VH

Customer:

my start menu "all programs" list windows virtual pc then two sub categories windows virtual pc and xp mode

Customer:

yes

Customer:

three steps

Customer:

prior to that there was no windows virtual pc folder in programs

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Let me ask... do you happen to have an AMD "Bulldozer" processor?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Or know the model number of your proessor?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You seem to know your way around installing XP mode pretty well.

Customer:

just tried it again and it says "could not complete setup. Please try again."

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So I'm thinking that it may not be something you're doing

Customer:

takes about 6-7 minutes to get that far

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is the computer fairly new?

Customer:

brand new

Customer:

4 days old

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What model?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

We might be on to something.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

If so, there is a hotfix.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

But to get it, we have to be sure of the processor in the pc

Customer:

it has a AMD FX-4100 Box processor and a ASUS M5A97 board

Customer:

Fry's custome build

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Bingo.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That's the problem.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

The AMD FX-4100 is an AMD "Bulldozer"

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Which is a great processor BTW.

Customer:

8 gig of DDR3 1333MHz Dual BA

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

But there is a known issue in XP mode.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

AND there is actually a hotfix for it.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I know it seems like I just totally made that up.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

But take a look here:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

This is one of those Hotfixes that Microsoft makes you jump through a few hoops to get because it's very specific and they don't want to be responsible for people installing it on systems that do not have one of these processors, so I will tell you how to get it.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Are you with me?

Customer:

yep

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok.. you will go to the link that I give you, which is Microsoft, but it won't be like a regular download.

Customer:

nice catch by the way

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Agree to the terms

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Thanks... I love when an answer ends up being black and white... rarely happens

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then on the next page, select the hotfix - there should only be one displayed.

Customer:

agree to what terms?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

then type in your email address, confirm email address and then type in the letters that are impossible to read

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And then click request hotfix

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

you will get a link in your email.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Hotfix

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Just the regular legal stuff... that they are not responsible for anything.

Customer:

click on that last link and agrre to terms?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Yes.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then just fill out the information.

Customer:

done

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You should get a link in your email

Customer:

ok got the email

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Click on that link to download

Customer:

ok it requests restart

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

you can add this page to favorites if you ned to come back

Customer:

ok

Customer:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Yes

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

almost positive

Customer:

lol

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I know better

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Comptuters are never 100%

Customer:

ok I'm going to restart and will lose you...

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Just add the page to favorites.

Customer:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

We want to make sure you can get back her to accept!

Customer:

Customer:

Customer:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

Customer:

this will take 5 minutes or so

Customer:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Yes. I think you can just start XP mode again, but not sure.

Customer:

Customer:

Customer:

Customer:

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That one was a bit tricky

Customer:

xp mode

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Not sure how Microsoft expects a user to figure that out.

Customer:

doing the happy dance

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Or an "Expert" for that matter.

Thanks Michael

Thank you! You have a powerful new computer - I suspect that things will go more smoothly for you in the future. That being said, it might be a good day to play the lottery since that hotfix applies to about 1 out of every 10 million people using Windows!

Thanks again.

Mike
