hello, i have a problem with internet explorer
Computer OS: Windows XP
both ie and firefox display of content is missing and ive tried everything of my knowledge and googling as i can
Hi there, and welcome to JustAnswer
Is this for a particular website, or lots of websites?
Did you see my question?
i recieved your text and opened the page on my iphone but wanted to close it and open my question on my computer and it said page loading please wait
yes i replied on my iphone but maybe u did not get it...anyway the problem is with ie and firefox but google chrome displays websites properly..i have prtscr images of what the webpage looks like in both ie and firefox can you recieve them
its ok, can you do the following please
click start, run
type in %temp%
tell me when you see a window open
i see it
ok, delete all files there please
so the folder is empty
1 hidden folder
do i view hidden folders to delete it to?
yes please, but dont delete the TEMP directory
just the files ion it please
DF5166 is being used by another peron or program
ok, delete all other files please
done and the hidden folder was a temp folder for IEfix that i have attemtped to use to resolve the problem but it didnt and i delted it too
ok, now close IE
reopen and test please
ok just so you know i am on a diff computer in chat than the one with the problem
problem still remains
ok, press CTRL+F5
to refresh the page please
ok, in IE
click tools, internet options
Then the General Tab
click Delete then Delete again
once it completes, go to the Advance tab
when it completes, close and reopen IE and test please
done this before but i did it again and still the same
is it just for one website?
no it seems to be all websites...like google home page is missing the google logo and other content such as the background colors or images behind text and this is the same for other pages like cnn
ok, click start, type in %tmp%
delete all files there too please
is there a way i can send you the image of a webpage. i have it saved as a bmp file
same folder with the dfs166 file that is being used ny another person or program
provide me the download link please
would it be feasible to try a reboot in safe mode and try to delete that file?
im uploading the image
yes, you can try that
do you know how to enter safe mode?
http://wikisend.com/download/795064/Internet Explorer Home Page (no Google logo).bmp
yes i do..have a look and i will reboot in safe mode
will f8 be good or should i use safeboot under msconfig
F8 is best
deleted in safe mode shall i reboot or stay in safe mode for further investigation?
not in safe mode with networking though
reboot as you wont have internet access
just so you know i am computer savvy so i know my way around but i have been working on this problem for 3 days and its the longest i have worked on a computer problem for a long time
the problem remains!
ok, you have windows XP right?
yes andnow it seems to be running really slow opening up webpages
ok, do this please
click start, type in cmd and press enter
in the black window type in chkdsk /f
press enter and preform a scan please
file system is fat32 cannot lock drive...reboot y/n
and it will do it on reboot
ending new message toolbar pops up...if that means anything then continued to reboot
it seems as though it is running alot slower since we deleted the temp files and maybe the dfs166 file in particular...possibly because a program is having trouble finding that file??
no, it should run faster but may need a defrag after removing so many files
i have tried uninstalling both firefox and ie and reinstalling, ran malware bytes and spybot
also vundofix that detected no problems
ok, could be an issue on the hard disk which this scan should resolve
this is actually happening the same on 2 seperate laptops, one that had the vundo trojan but malwarebytes fixed it on the one but the one im working on had no errors with malwarebytes
google chrome displays the websites perfectly on both
it is a weird problem!
i have tried to google answers but got no real answers
ok, go back to the black window
let it run, restart and test please
i have tried this but will try again
if you have tried
can you check in IE
done that yup
ok then do this please
no performance tab under system properties
in advance on system properties?
under the advanced tab there is performance and setting
yes, that one please
opens a window with visual effects-advanced-data execution...
u can select -let windows decide...-adjust for best performance...-adjust for best appearance...
adjust for best performance please
done...also now when i open a webpage i am getting a computer beep as if it was searching for something or wants to open something that is not found
ok, do the images display?
nope same problem
can you restart the computer?
then test please
ok restarting http://wikisend.com/download/489420/cnn with google chrome.bmp and http://wikisend.com/download/189220/cnn with ie.bmp

Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Policies, Microosft, Internet Explorer, select Control Panel and look on the list to the right for an item named “HomePage”, if it is there double click on it and set its value to “0” (zero). Next, go back to the beginning of the tree list where the HKEY items are and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Policies, Microsoft, Internet Explorer, click Control Panel and check again for the HomePage item and change its value to “0” (zero) if needed.

what do i put in the internet explorer custom title for current user or all users
anything you want
it is just the title text
lock ie start page was already unchecked
check it, ok it, then uncheck it please
do i uncheck ie tweaks as well
this is gonna take awhile i think...what are we accomplishing here
trying to get the security enabled in ie

actually W3i.IQ5.fraud came up right away
hkey local machine\software\freeze.com

can you get to security?
or is it still geyed out?
ok, close IE
go back to registry editor
In the right-pane, double-click Flags and click Decimal

Example: If Flags value reads 0 (Decimal), set it to 3 (i.e., 0 + 1 + 2)
close it then reopen IE and test
there is alot of entries in this area
under Zones / 1?
starting with 1001 reg_word

are you connected directly to the modem?
or in a work environment?
also, do this please
yes on a network environment
do you have an ISA server?
no i doubt it
ok, it can cause this problem, do my last instructions and then we will check
ie page loads correctly!
firefoc loads correctly
but lost desktop wallpaper
ok, put the wallpaper back
ok its back
ok, this setting most likely got set during a windows update
why did the high contrast have to be unchecked
could be the video card driver or a windows update
but good to see it is now working!
let me know please if you need any more information
when i reapply the high contrast setting the icon text goes really large is this normal
and is the high contrast setting supposed to be unchecked?
now when i unchecked it all the text under the desktop icons are huge and in white with black background
ok, you should have left it unchecked
restart the computer with it unchecked
if it is still like that
reset the XP Themes and font
by right clicking on the desktop
and chossing properties
so all the work we did and that was the problem?
yep, but the work was elimination
can be so many different reasons for this problem
should a person clear all restore points and create a new one?
if you dont want the old restore points anymore
