Hello, and welcome to Justanswer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be happy to assist you.
Please let me know when you are ready.
May I know the exact error message you are getting?
It boots up in recovery mode, can't boot into Windows, comes up to System Recovery Options.
Do you get any message?
Windows Error Recovery... Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. (It did download a bunch of patches yesterday).
By doing the recovery, you will loose all the data in the computer and it wil restore it to factory settings.
Windows is loading files... Tells me to select the keyboard (US), then comes to System Recovery Options. No Operating System is listed .
But it does have an option not to lose the files if I can find the right drivers.
The system recovery will restore the computer to the factory installed state.
Then can we do something else?
It has an option to use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repaid. If your operating system isn't listed, click Load Drivers and then install drivers for your hard disks.
Please restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key.
Do you get an option for System Restore or Repair your computer?
Ah, it says Repair your computer
plus a bunch of other options
Select that and select System Restore from the options.
You have Startup repair, system restore, command prompt etc, under recovery tools. Right?
It just routed me back to where I was when I started... hold on, let me try it again... Yes, I think I saw Startup Repair
Select System restore from the list.
I've tried Startup repair a few times, trying it now...
It's attempting repairs... sorry to take so long
Please do not choose startup repair.
Select System Restore.
Woops... well, it will cancel in a minute, that hasn't worked before...
And restore the computer to an earlier date.
Ok... System Restore... will try in just a minute
Still here... sorry it's taking so long... Okay, startup Repaid cannot repair automatically
Okay, selecting System Restore
It says I must specify which Windows Installation to restore -- restart and select an OS ... only problem is, no OS is listed...
It was working fine bfore. Right?
Fine til yesterday... when I logged out, it did a bunch of system updates... they completed as far as I know, I didn't shut off the computer
I'm at the System Recovery Options but no OS is listed and I don't have a drivers disk to insert
Please turn off the computer, remove all external devices, battery and AC Adapter from the computer.

Then, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Then, insert the AC Adapter.

Do you have any CDs inside the CD/DVD drive?
Please get into BIOS once again, find the boot sequence and change first boot device as Hard drive. Then save and exit from BIOS.
Boot 1 says Toshiba MKxxxx .. then optiarc dvd, then legacy PCI device... which one s/b first?

Select Start windows normally.
No, it will not be a recovery option.
I'm at System Recovery Options
May I know the options?
Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Dx, Command Promjpt, Recovery Management
Are you able to select System Restore, Command Prompt? Either of these?
Please check if you are able to get into command prompt.
Type in rstrui.exe
And press enter.
it will start system restore.
It says I must specify which Windows Installation to restore
It does not detect the OS still.
Please wait a minute.
BTW -- c: says the Volume doesn't contain a recognized file system and takes me back to x:\windows\system32
I would suggest you better restore the computer to factory settings.
However, you will loose all the data in your computer.
Yup, I guess I'm seeing that. How do we restore to factory.
Recovery management selection doesn't allow me to select restore type, they're both grayed out.
If the recovery drive is corrupt you will not be able to do it without the disc.
Is there any way to get the disc?
You have to order it from Gateway.
Ok... is it even worth it? Maybe the hard drive is just totally hosed...
It will not cosr more then US &25.
If you are replacing the hard drive, you need to have the disc in order to reinstall the operating system on the new hard drive.
Ok, I can do that. Shall I just find it on the Internet or do you have a link for me? ANd I do appreciate your time and knowledge, you do know your stuff.
I will proivde the link.
Go to the link below and enter the SNID of your computer.
Ok, thank you. Is that it? I press the accept button?
Please try ordering it right now and let me know if you are able to place the order.
K, it's ordered. Any chance I can use the recovery CD to get the drivers and still save my data?
You will get the drivers disc with the recovery disc.
There is no need to worry about drivers.
Okay. I appreciate your help.
However, you have to contact alocal technician in order to save your data.
Okay, I can do that.
Do you have any questions?
Now do I press Accept?
If the response was helpful, please click ACCEPT, so that I can get paid for my time and effort.
A positive feedback is precious to me.
Sure, will do. Thank you so much.
