Then a window popped up: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access them.

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

Something has really damaged your operating system files then. You 2 things left.

1) System Restore (back in time)

2) Factory Restore (back to it was out of the box)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lets do a System Restore, go back to the First of the month if you can. There are 2 ways you can do this.

1) From Boot

2) From Desktop

------------------------------------------------------ 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------

System Restore from Boot

1) Turn on the computer

2) Start tapping/pressing F8 until you see Advanced Options Menu

3) Select Repair Your Computer and press enter

4) Click Next

5) Click System Restore

6) Restart your computer when complete to see if that fixed it.

Windows Vista/7 System Restore (GUIDE)

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial142.html

------------------------------------------------------ 2 ----------------------------------------------------------------

System Restore from Desktop

1) Click Start

2) Click All Programs

3) Click Accessories

4) Click System Tools

5) Click System Restore

6) Select Choose a different restore point

7) Click Next

8) Choose a restore point in the list

9) Click Next

10) Click Finish

Now, let it restart the computer by itself and see what happens. Let me know if this does not get the job done, but it should.

GOOD LUCK!

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Actually, I tried that, but the earliest restore point availabe is October 22 which is after the update.
Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.
Did you try to check the BOX at the bottom to show more restore points?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yep.
Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

Then you will want to go ahead and backup your files and put the computer back to Factory Settings. Most likely a virus is the root cause behind the damaging / corrupting of the system files so make sure you get a good one and keep it updated.

This is how you put the computer back to Factory Settings...

Select models, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.

Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.

To start the system recovery:

1) Restart the computer.
2) When the Gateway logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
3) If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
4) After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
5) If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Gateway Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Gateway

Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Called them, too. Can't get past level 1 tech support. Their answer is to do a system recovery which, of course, wipes everything back to factory settings.

So what happens. Can I just live with this error? My stuff is backed up, but I haven't got time to rebuild the programs right now.

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

No, if Windows is not Genuine, it will sooner or later shut you down until you activate windows.

The other option would be to call Microsoft Windows 7 General Assist Support and let them take remote control over the computer to fix it. Not sure if they would charge or not but thats one way.

Another way "if I understand correctly" is you can do the Windows Anytime Upgrade using the Same Operating System you have now, same Product Key, so what that does is like a Repair of Windows. This will keep everything as you see it now if you can get it to work.

1) Click Start

2) Click All Programs

3) Click Windows Anytime Upgrade

4) Use Already Have Key

5) Enter Key

6) Upgrade

Customer: replied 2 years ago.

The upgrade key you entered is for an edition that does not work with Windows Anytime Upgrade. Enter a different upgrade key.

~ sigh ~

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

That makes no sense. Yeah you can call Microsoft to fix this or re-install windows which is the others you pretty much have left.

Good Luck!

Okay. Sigh.

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

I will look into this more, and if anything new I will post back here but Im 99% sure we tried everything to fix the corrupted services for the activation.

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 2 years ago.

Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannowThe sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Hope this helps
