We were able to follow the instructions until we got to the exceptions tab. After we hit that we don't understand what steps to take to add mineshaft which has not been downloaded because of the firewall. Thanks for the help.

Oh I see, it hasn't been downloaded yet, what happens when you click the minecraft.exe link on this page?

http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp

Does it give you a yellow bar saying the download was blocked?

Try right clicking the minecraft.exe link on that page and select save target/link as, then save it to your desktop.

Additionally, it may be that the browser is blocking you from downloading Minecraft - if you are using IE, please go to www.firefox.com and install the browser there, then use that to download Minecraft.
