Customer Question

I have a Maxtor Hard drive that was originally the main drive for a Compaq Presario Desktop. I now have a larger drive I'm using as the Master drive and want to use the old Maxtor as a slave. I've tried several different combinations of Jumper placements, Bios resets, etc, etc. So far the Bios recognizes the Maxtor as the slave but on the "My Computer" list of drives it does not show up show up . Any ideas?

Optional Information:
Computer OS: Windows XP
Browser: IE

Already Tried:
Bios Reset, Remove from list on Device Manager and restarted computer, Tried 7 combinations Jumper set using a pair of 2 pin Jumpers, Tried No jumpers at all, Tried roll back on driver, and at least 3-4 other things the past 4 days. This drive was working until I retired it to "Slave service a couple of days ago.

Is it a IDE or SATA hard drive?

Not sure. Here is all the numbers on the front: Maxtor N256, Fireball 3 ATA / 133 HDD 40 GB, LBA:80293248, MA2F040L0710641 AAA F19DKE7E, Code VAM51JJo, D33019, E - H011 - 02 - 3056.

Ok, it is a IDE hard drive. Now let me know that, do you have connected both the hard drive with a single data cable or both the hard drive have two different data cable

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

One Ribbon cable with two attachments - One Master and one Slave. My Bios recognizes this on the Boot Priority List. However once windows XP starts and I go to my computer only the master drive is shown.

Do you have any extra data cable?

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

No. However, when I use an older Barracuda 7200.7 Hard drive as a slave, it works just fine. However I want my Maxtor as the slave if at all possible.

Do you have formatted your Maxtor hard drive before using it as a Slave?

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

This Maxtor Drive was the one and only hard drive that came with the Compaq Presario I Have now, I upgraded with a much larger hard drive for the main drive. It works well. When tring to set up jumper settings for this model I found 3 seperate sources that gave me 4 differnt ways of setting them. One way was using two sets of 2 pin jumpers and one was using no jumpers at all. Like I saud, My Bios screen recognizes the drive and as the slave drive. It just doesn't show up on the "My Computer area on my XP.

Ok,please follow the steps below and let me know.

Click Start and select Run...

Type diskmgmt.msc and press enter.

Disk Management Window will open.

In that window you will be able to see the number of drives, like DISK 0 , DISK 1 etc..

Let me know, how many drives can you see there?

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

Well, right now, just my new "master" drive. The Maxtor is sitting here on the desk.

I got tired of try wrong jumper pin settings and left it sitting here on the table.

I understand your frustration, no problem, take your time and let me know and before that see the image below and set the jumper on the HDD.

You are showing me how to set up jumpers for a 10 pin cicuit. Mines only 8.

Ok, then check the diagram on the hard drive, it has the perfect combination.

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

The diagram on the fron is extremely confusing. It shows 5 pins at the top and four below. Also the varios settings it shows is in two different colors. I do have an arae for the jumpers of 5 pins at the top and 4 at the bottom. However, the diagram is very confusing and I'm not sure what it is asking me to do. I 2 pn jumper or 2 2 pin jumpers or a 3 pin and a 4 pin jumper together. It not clear what the proper sequence is.

Do you have two jumpers or one?

Customer replied 699 days and 18 hours ago.

I have 2 2 pin jumpers available to use. Other sources said to use no jumpers at all for a slave while another told me to use 2. I Think they were both wrong. I had no trouble placing the jumper on the master drive I'm using now.

Ok, if you have two jumpers and 9 pin slot (5 above and 4 below) then see the image below for the slave combination in dual HDD mode.

So you are saying the I need the two 2 pin jumpers to be verticle on the 1st series of Pins. Otherwords 1 to 2 and 3 to 4. You are telling me that this will get my Maxtor to show up on My Computer list of drives. Is that correct?

Yes, this only applies to those drives in which two jumpers are provided, if you got only one jumper with the hard drive then just sort the 1 and 2 no. pins.
