cant open aol 9.6 (upgraded to it yesterday) from desktop

Customer Question

can't open aol 9.6 (upgraded to it yesterday) from desktop icon, only thru IE. Get message that computer can't get an internet connection. Error AC-3000: err 0x84100116. OS WinXP-SP3: ACS 4.9.13.3, TCP/IP Connection IP is operational. Firewalls: None found

Hi, I'm Bernie and I'll be the technician helping you today. Sorry to hear you're having this issue.

  1. Click on Start, Settings and Control Panel.
    Windows XP users: Click Start and Control Panel.
  2. Double-Click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Highlight AOL Uninstaller and click Change/Remove or Add/Remove.
  4. Select AOL Connectivity Service 4.6 and click Uninstall.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. When prompted, click Restart to restart your PC. If you select Restart Later the One-Click Fix will complete the next time you restart your PC.
  7. After restarting the PC, open AOL and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a new connection location.

I did uninstall AOL Connectivity, but I'm not getting any prompts to restart

I see - please try this:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools from the menu bar
3. Select Internet options
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. Click the reset button
6. Click the reset button again
7. Click close, and then OK
8. It will restart your Internet Explorer

Then go here and install the new IE 9:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/home?ocid=ie9_bow_Google&WT.srch=1&mtag=SearGoogle

Finally go to this site and re-download and install AOL 9.6
http://daol.aol.com/software/aoldesktop96/

Does that let you now use AOL 9.6?

No, I still can't open aol 9.6. Idid reload IE, (but had to use IE 8 because of WindowsXP), and reloaded aol 9.6.
