Hello, are you running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

Thanks! Please do this...

1) Click Start

2) Click Control Panel

3) Click Add/Remove Programs

4) Right-Click and UNinstall Ask

5) Restart Computer

6) Done

Now, after you restart the computer, try to get online and run this Microsoft Fix It Tool (Man) to Reset your IE back to Default Settings, and if successful, you'll be ok from here after you re-setup your homepage.

Hi--Ask is gone, however my Internet Options are not back and I can not change my home page withing IE. I did not restart my computer yet...
Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

I think you would have restarted the computer already to access the new account correct? From here, it sounds like a virus/spyware controlling the rest and since you have Windows XP I want you to run combofix for me.

Please shut down the computer and turn it off. Then power it back on and lets go into Safemode with Networking.

1) Turn on the computer

2) Start tapping/pressing F8 until you see Advanced Options Menu

3) Select Safemode with Networking and press enter

4) Press enter for OS/XP

5) Choose your account (not admin)

6) Click yes to continue in safemode

Please download/save ComboFix and run it to remove these infections. Please follow my instructions.

(IMPORTANT) Click OK to continue on those popup messages from combofix, DO NOT disable the anti-virus, just click OK to go on and you might have 3 different OK boxes to pop up, and if it ask to download the recovery console just click NO.

Try to run COMBOFIX and it will take about 5 minutes to complete tops. The Microsoft Level 2 Techs use this and nothing gets past it. This is a FREE scan and it does not install anything on your computer, it runs from the command prompt!

http://www.combofix.org/downloadlink.php <<<<<<CLICK LINK TO DOWNLOAD

1) Save it to your desktop

2) Run It

When it is done, you will get a notepad with the report. If anything was deleted it will show you at the top like this....

(((((((((((((((((( other deletions )))))))))))))))))))

Here is you a GUIDE just in case you want to see what happens.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

After that, close the notepad, restart your computer, and everything should be back to normal.

THANKS!

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

THANKS! While I am over looking all of this, please go into the registry and delete these out.

1) Click Start
2) Click Run
3) Type regedit (and press enter)
4) Click the + sign for HKEY_CURRENT_USER
5) Click the + sign for Software
6) Click the + sign for Microsoft
7) Click the + sign for Windows
8) Click the + sign for CurrentVersion
9) Now Click on the Folder Run (Leave Default on the right-hand side, leave the anti-virus if listed, but you can pretty much right-click and delete everything else from the list)

Now, scroll back up to the top and click the - sign for HKEY_CURRENT_USER and make it a + sign. Then do this.

1) Click the + sign for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2) Click the + sign for Software
3) Click the + sign for Microsoft
4) Click the + sign for Windows
5) Click the + sign for CurrentVersion
6) Now Click on the Folder Run (Leave Default on the right-hand side, leave the anti-virus if listed, but you can pretty much right-click and delete everything else from the list)

Now, scroll back up to the top and click the - sign for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and make it a + sign. Then do this.

1) Click the + sign for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2) Click the + sign for Software
3) Click the + sign for Microsoft
4) Click the + sign for Windows NT
5) Click the + sign for CurrentVersion
6) Click the + sign for Winlogon
7) Click the + sign for Notify

Under Notify this is the MAIN Windows Logon System Files

---crypt32chain
---cryptnet
---cscdll
---dimsntfy
---ScCertProp
---Schedule
---sclgntfy
---SensLogn
---termsrv
---wlballon

If you see anything on your computer that is (NOT) in the list above, Right-Click and DELETE

Now, scroll back up to the top and click the - sign for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and make it a + sign. Now you can close out the registry editor and restart the computer.

Let me know when this is completed.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.
There is stuff on the right side under default after cleaning up the left side to match main system files...do they go?
Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

The only thing you should look at is what is on the right-hand side under default. Now for the Winlogon/Notify, you only need to look from where it starts which is called crypt32chain and when you get to wlballon, (DO NOT) go past this to stay on the safe side.

Just so you know, I already found a Trojan Horse Virus in that log you sent me, after you complete this, I will let you rescan using hijackthis and you can delete what I have ready for you here. So after you restart the pc, let me know for the next step!

Your doing great!

What version of IE are you running? The default for XP was IE6, did you happen to upgrade to IE7 and then on to IE8?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.
8 ..........
Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

Thanks! I want you to do this for me now, UNinstall AVG, restart the computer. Then download Eset Smart Security 32bit and run a Full System Scan for me. Get the 30day trial. I use this myself, nothing gets past it when you are using it before things gets out of hand, and our very own homeland security approves it.

If AVG gives you any problems during the uninstall, here is a removal tool...

Customer: replied 3 years ago.
eset is scnning...will be be removing hot shot shield don't use it anyway

still no internet option

Expert:  Anthony Brewster replied 3 years ago.

We need to run a Full System Scan using Eset. Then if finds anything we need to remove it from the Quarine Section as well. After all of this, I want you to UNinstall IE8 from the Control Panel. Then restart the computer. Go back and see if IE7 is listed and get rid of it but I dont think you'll see it so you may or may not have that.

Then go back into the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and hit Add/Remove Windows Components over on the left hand side, find Internet Explorer and Uncheck that, restart the computer and IE is completely removed from the system.

Finally, go back and put the check back in there. Then test it out before upgrading to IE7, and finally putting IE8 back on.

Thanks!

I kept doing research for the IE issue and found this. Wanted you to try it when you have the time.

1. Open "regedit.exe" from the "Start" button (Windows XP users should choose choose "Start" - "Run", then run the registry editor).

2. Navigate to the following key: My Computer / HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Policies / Microsoft / Internet Explorer

3. Navigate to the Restrictions key, or create a key Restrictions.

4. To enable the "Internet Options" menu:

You should see a key "NoBrowserOptions" with a value of 1. Either delete the key or change its value to 0.

All The Best!
