My HP laptop wont recognize an external speaker system (Bose

Resolved Question:

My HP laptop won't recognize an external speaker system (Bose Speakers) which it has recognized previously. Music will only play through computer speakers. Is there anything I can do to change this?

The jack is plugged into the appropriate location for external speakers

What I am asking is, is it a 3.5 mm or an optical out?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
I believe it is a 3.5 mm jack

The first thing I would do is narrow down the problem. If you plug an ipod or other device into the speakers, do they work? Have you checked all the volume levels on the computer. Go to the control panel and select Hardware and Sound. Click Manage Audio Devices listed under the Sound section. Is the headphone out enabled and set as default. Is the program that you are using to play sound with not muted in the mixer and the volume level is set properly?
