Restart your computer in safe mode and than try installing the software.

To start in safe mode:

Restart the computer and as soon as it starts booting keep tapping the F8 key, chose safe mode with networking from the advanced menu option.

In the login screen choose the admin account to log in to the system.

Now try to install the software and let me know what happens.

How did these files we deleted prevent installing adobe reader?

Seems like a earlier installed version was causing the issue. Deleting the files removed it.
