I did that and nothing happened. The hour glass came on for a second but then nothing. The task manager just remained open.

Please goto safe mode using the following steps.
Steps:
1. Restart your laptop and keep pressing F8 key.

3. Select "Safe Mode"
4. Press Enter
5. Windows should load in Safe Mode

Yes!!!! All the icons are there, with safe mode on every corner, lol.

Sorry for the delay. Please do this in Safe Mode

1. Close all documents that you may have open (save them if you want).
2. Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
3. Now click on the All Programs menu option.
4. Click on Accessories Start Menu group.
5. Click on the System Tools Start Menu group.
6. Click on the System Restore icon.

After you click on the icon, if a User Account Control window opens you should click on the Continue button.

A window will open up and you will now be do a System Restore. From this window you can specify the restore point that you would like to restore.

 

Select the radio button that is labeled "Restore my computer to an earlier time". Go back 2-3 weeks and see if it gets solved.


Now restart computer in Normal mode and see result

I am at the seld a Restore Point screen and it will only let me choose today's date, but it stopped working Saturday so how can I choose a date before that?

If it does not show you prior dates ... then we cannot restore it to an older date.

Do you have XP Installation Disc with you ?

Or do you have Acer recovery disc ?

I read many posts related to the topic and eventually did the following :

1. Boot up to windows
2. ctrl+alt+del to get windows task manager
3. File, new task, typed regedit click ok
4. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\Image File Execution Options\
5. In there look up for explorer.exe folder , delete it (you may have an
entry in the root of the Image File folder as well.. delete them also).
6. Reboot and everything should be back to normal.

Hello,

Thats strange. Anyways, either somehow your system files have got corrupted or you have got a bad virus / malware on your computer.

Goto Safe mode. Run Hijackthis tool (explained below) and copy paste me the Log file that it generates.
