I setup the new computer outlook email account settings identically to the old computer. But when I send the test message in the account setup dialog I receive the error messages:"Send test email message: The specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct...""Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): The specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct..."If I click "More Setting" and the "Advanced" tab and check the checkbox for "This server requires an encryted connection", the 2nd error goes away. But this also makes the setting different than the old computer which is successfully sending/receiving email and I still can't send email because of the 1st error. What should I try next?
Computer OS: Windows 7Browser: Firefox Already Tried: I adjusted the SSL settings in the Outlook "More Settings/Advanced" dialog.
Hi and welcome to Just answer
Who is your service provider please ?
Thank you
Cox.net
Cox.net is a POP3.
Hmmm
There are no special setting for Cox.net regards XXXXX XXXXX
You can verify the server names you are using are correct against these setting here
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010962641033.aspx
You should uncheck any boxes regards XXXXX XXXXX the advanced settings and make sure the outgoing mail server port is 25 and incoming is 110
If it still fails it is unlikely to be caused by an Outlook setting.

My question was what do I do next to fix the problem. I asked the question because setting it up the same on the new computer as I did on the old one isn't working. You are telling me to set it up the same as it is on the old one. I asked the question because that isn't working.
If your setting match then i think it may not be an Outlook issue.
I will opt out to see if anyone else has more ideas for you to try
Relist: Answer quality.I bought a new computer and when I setup my email account in Outlook the same way as it is setup in the old computer, it isn't able to send/receive email. The answer I received told me to set it up the same way that I set it on my first try. That didn't help.
I suspect the problem might be that the new computer is using Windows 7 and I am installing my Office 2003. Has anyone heard anything about a problem where Outlook won't send/receive email because of using an old version of office with Windows 7?
Office 2003 is compatible with Windows 7.
I am not aware of any general issues with Outlook and Windows 7.
There are updates for Office 2003 though so it might be worth running Windows update and selecting anything outlook related to be installed.
Thanks. I'm in the process of doing that now.
ok
Same situation after downloading all MS fixes. I also went to another PC using Vista and created the Outlook user ID and set it up the same as I have tried to on the brand new laptop. It worked worked on the Vista desktop machine. The new laptop has internet and continues to give the same error messages implying I need to adjust the SSL settings. I have tried clicking on the check boxes under the More settings/Advanced tab, but the system presently is set to the default setting for everything under the Advanced tab - just like what worked on the Vista desktop machine. One more thing. The new computer came with trial versions of Office 2007 on it. We installed Office 2003 because we legally own it but the system appeared to be trying to open Word 2007 as the email editor. When I couldn't make the email work, I uninstalled Office 2007 hoping the problem would be related to that. That didn't fix it. So I uninstalled Office 2003. Then I reinstalled 2003, with restarts between each of these steps. It still doesn't work.
Try putting :465 or :587 on the end of the outgoing mail server address.
For Example SMTP.cox.xxx:465
I tried adding those numbers to the SMTP address. It added an error when I clicked on "Test settings". It could not find the outgoing server. Both numbers had the same impact.
Those are port numbers which you can try adding in the port section of the smtp server port.
Most Isp's have several ports for sending email through and for some reason they are not allowing your new machine to send through port 25.
It didn't improve the situations.
Sorry i have no other ideas
It may be an av program. If you have one disable the mail scanning option and see if it helps
I'll try it. But if you remember, the 2 error messages were, (!) "Send test email message: The specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct..." and (2) "Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): The specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct..." So it sounds like the message isn't coming out to me. But I'll try what you suggested.
Because the same settings work elsewhere you know that they are fine.
For some reason Outlook is not routing port 25 on that particular machine and it has to be something local to the setup there.
If the isp doesn't get the correct response from the machine it will not forward the mail.
I believe you got it. The computer came with a antivirus trial installed - from Trend Micro. But I already own Norton. So I did not activate the Trend AV software. I just uninstalled the Trend AV software and the problem went away. MUCHAS GRACIAS!!
Great
Well done you
